Orchards and bush surround Whakamārama accommodation in the hills west of Tauranga, where farmland runs up against the Kaimai Range.
Avocados grow on the ridges, and walking tracks head into the Kaimai Mamaku forest from the end of the road. A cottage up here trades the coast for fog in the valleys at first light and tūī in the trees, with Tauranga about twenty minutes back down the hill.
