Bach accommodation is the New Zealand original: plain, well-worn holiday houses Kiwis have gone back to every summer for generations.

A bach is not trying to impress: mismatched furniture, a stack of board games, fishing rods in the shed, and a barbecue that has seen a few seasons. Most sit near the coast or a lake, within a short walk or drive of the water, and they suit families and old friends who return to the same spot each year. In Otago and Southland you will hear the same thing called a crib.
