One open room with a bed, a kitchenette and a bathroom: studio accommodation in New Zealand is the simplest thing a host can offer. There is enough kitchen to make breakfast and heat up last night’s leftovers, enough space for two, and nothing to look after.

That suits a single night between drives, a weekend where you plan to be out all day, or a couple who want somewhere central and no rooms they will not use. If you are travelling without a car, one on the main street beats one out by the highway.
