Manawatū-Whanganui

Manawatū-Whanganui accommodation follows the river, with cottages and rural stays from Taumarunui down to Foxton near the coast. Canoe trips set out from Taumarunui and run downstream for days, through steep bush valleys most travellers never see.

Whanganui itself is worth a full day, with heritage streets, glass studios and a lift tunnelled into Durie Hill. Upstream, the river road threads past marae and small settlements toward the national park, unsealed in places and slow by design.

Palmerston North adds student-town cafés and the wind-farm tracks at Te Āpiti, while Foxton still turns a Dutch windmill and keeps its flax-weaving history close.
