Queenstown accommodation looks out on Lake Wakatipu with the Remarkables standing across the water. Apartments cluster near the waterfront and the gondola base, while holiday homes spread through Fernhill, Sunshine Bay and Frankton.

Ski season starts in June and the town fills. By summer the same visitors are riding the Queenstown Trail, swimming off the shingle at Queenstown Bay, or out among the Gibbston cellar doors. Arrowtown holds its gold-rush lanes up the valley, and evenings in January stay light past nine.
