Upriver from Whanganui, Kaiwhaiki accommodation trades town for farmland, papa cliffs and a stretch of road above the water.

A cottage out here means mist off the river in the morning and headlights you can count on one hand. Whanganui is close enough for supplies and a meal, though the drive itself, one bend at a time, is most of the reason for staying.
