Kawarau Cottage - Vineyard and River Views
Welcome to Kawarau Cottage, a peaceful retreat on a working vineyard and orchard in Bannockburn.
A comfortable base for exploring Central Otago, it’s ideal for cyclists on both the nearby Lake Dunstan Trail and the Kawarau Gorge Trails (access to the trail is from the driveway). There is plenty of room for storing and charging your bikes.
Guests who enjoy walking have nearby access to the historic Bannockburn Sluicings and the Kawarau River Track (both these can also be biked). It’s a great spot for wine lovers and outdoor adventurers where guests can enjoy a rural setting and clear night skies; a genuine taste of Central Otago. Located off the road towards the river, this property offers views to the north of the mountains and the Kawarau River.
Inside, the cottage features a functional living space designed for relaxation. The living area includes two couches, a dining table with four chairs, a television (note this is not a smart tv) with Starlink internet. The practical kitchen includes a microwave, hob, fridge, and a washing machine. The layout ensures an easy stay for families, two couples or a couple seeking a self-contained getaway. It’s an ideal overnight stop while biking the trails.
The cottage accommodates up to four guests across two sunny bedrooms. The main bedroom has a queen bed and sliding doors that open directly to the lawn, garden and views. The second bedroom has two single beds. Both rooms face north to capture the sunshine. A tiled bathroom completes the indoor layout.
Outside, guests can enjoy the sheltered area with outdoor furniture and a barbeque. Walking across the lawn, guests can make use of the outdoor seating to enjoy sweeping river and vineyard views. While the river is close, direct access down the steep bank is not recommended. You are welcome to move the outdoor furniture to follow or shelter from the sun!
The cottage is adjacent to our home (yet is private), and the entire yard is fenced, providing peace of mind if you are travelling with a young family. Guests are welcome to wander through the vineyard though we ask that you check first due to farming activities. If you are interested and we are available, we are happy to walk you through the vineyard and answer any questions you may have.
Parking is available adjacent to the cottage, with plenty of space to park vehicles, boats and bikes.
*Please note that this cottage is situated on a working orchard. Depending on the season, agricultural activities like frost fighting or harvesting will be in progress. Spring frost fighting includes the use of wind machines*
Kitchen & Dining
The practical kitchen includes a microwave, hob, fridge, and a washing machine. Adjacent is a table and chairs for four guests.
Bedrooms
The cottage features two north-facing sunny bedrooms. The main bedroom offers a queen bed and a sliding door opening to the deck and garden. The second bedroom contains two single beds, providing a practical setup for families or small groups.
Bathrooms
The cottage includes a tiled bathroom with a toilet, shower and vanity.
Outdoor Areas
There is a sunny deck attached to the cottage and a separate sheltered outdoor space including dining furniture and a barbeque. Guests are welcome to move the table and chairs to chase the sun or shade!
Take a short wander to the front of the lawn to sit and relax and enjoy panoramic views of the river and surrounding vineyards.

The lounge area features comfortable couches and a tv (note this is not a smart tv). Free Wi-Fi is available throughout the property.
Nearby
Located on Felton Road, Kawarau Cottage puts the very best of Central Otago wine country right at your doorstep.
It’s just a short five-minute stroll across the vineyard to the award-winning cellar door of Te Kano Estate and across the road to the Mt Difficulty cellar door. Various other cellar doors, a hotel and cafe are also close by.
Access to both the Lake Dunstan Trail and Kawarau Gorge Trails are at the end of the driveway. Explore the dramatic landscapes of the Bannockburn Sluicings Historic Reserve, or the Kawarau River Track by foot or by bike. For a change of pace, it’s just a five-minute drive to experience the high-octane thrills at Highlands Motor Sport Park.
Whether you are enjoying world class pinot noir, riding the trails or exploring local gold mining history, Kawarau Cottage ensures you have easy access to it all.
House Rules
* PLEASE keep the gates closed at all times to ensure everyone’s safety on our working property. And the gate at the entrance to the cottage is to keep the rabbits out!
* Guests are welcome to wander through the vineyard, but please check with us first as viticultural activities may be in progress.
* No smoking or vaping inside.
* Quiet hours from 10:00 PM to 7:00 AM out of respect for our neighbours and the rural setting.
* Due to the steep riverbank, direct access down to the river is not recommended.
* Accidents and breakages happen, we understand. If there are any issues, please let us know as soon as possible, thank you.

Booking Cancellation Policy
Guests may cancel their booking up to 30 full days before check-in to receive a full refund of the booking amount. Cancellations made less than 30 full days before check-in are non-refundable. The 3% bank payment fee is non-refundable in all cases.
