Lyttelton accommodation clings to steep streets above a deepwater port, through the road tunnel from Christchurch.

Cottages and holiday homes line the terraces above the water, a short climb from the cafés and bars of London Street. The ferry to Diamond Harbour and Quail Island leaves from the wharf below, and the Bridle Path over the hill starts at the top of town. Antarctic expeditions once sailed from this harbour, Scott’s and Shackleton’s among them.
