Race weekends work better from a place of your own. Early starts are simpler with your own kitchen, there is room to sort gear the night before, and supporters have somewhere comfortable to wait between checkpoints.
Wanaka pairs its events calendar with lake and mountain scenery. Places to stay around the township suit groups heading to the slopes or the start line, with the lakefront close for the days in between.
